Still under the layers of gold, Smaug observes the meeting of Bilbo and Gollum, but his mind is set on the peculiar ring Bilbo is holding on to.
"This ring of gold, where is it from? What is this dark aura I cannot recognize? Was it forged by the stinking dwarves to kill me? Fools! They know I am invincible! I can feel your presence dwarves. You will tremble of fear before the mighty Smaug! Step out of the shadows you cowards..." (C.V)
Gollum takes a step back and his huge eyes are focused on Bilbo. ”Smeagol means no harm”, he whispers, ”Smeagol just needs precious, hobbits take precious.. thief, thief!” He suddenly gave out a scream and went at Bilbo, not caring about the sword. He was pretty sure that this hobbit didn't have it in him to hurt anything living. (K.Y.)
"I did not sign up for this particular situations, dwarves!" Bilbo yells out, while Gollum comes jumping at him. The struggle about the ring begins, but with a firm grip around the handle of the sword, Bilbo manages to give Gollum a thin cut on his thigh. Gollum releases his grip around the hobbit and backs off slowly. "Hah! that's what you get for messing with a Baggins, you foolish creature! Now leave and do not come back! There is nothing here that belongs to you!".
While feeling proud of his victory, Bilbo takes out the ring out of his pocket and gazes at it, while wispering "You are mine and no one elses". He then turns his eyes to the angry creature again and for just a moment he loses his balance by slipping on some golden coins laying on the ground underneath him. This was all that it took for him to drop his valuable ring among hundreds of thousands of other golden objects.
"No! Where is it!? I cannot go without it! And I will never let you have it!" Bilbo screams out, with terror having replaced the pride in his voice. And so the search begins.(A.C)
Gollum forgets about his injured thigh as soon as he notices how his precious is falling from Bilbo's hands. He runs as possessed towards the gold, jumping around like a maniac looking for it. Everything around him fades away, all he can hear is how the ring is calling for him. It wants to be found by Gollum, no one else. ”No one else must gets to it! Me must find it before hobbits finds it!”( K.Y.)
With the ring currently out of reach of both Bilbos and Gollums hands, Smaug is not sure he wants the ring among his gold. The ring is too evil, even for the mighty Smaug. Eager to learn if the ring is crafted by the dwarves, he quietly waits for their appearence. Smaug's chamber has not had any visitors for a very long time, and Smaug is hungry for blood, especially dwarven blood. (C.V.)
Both Bilbo and Gollum are digging frenetically amongst all the golden objects, competing about the ownership of their beloved ring. "You will never get it! You do not even know what to do with such a beauty!" Bilbo yells at Gollum. They keep searching, sweating while doing so and Bilbo's heart rate has never been higher. The search goes on for a good amount of time, and they are both exhausted. Bilbo stops and takes a moment to breathe, and while doing so, the corner of his eye is attracted to a familiar shape - he has found the ring under a golden cup. "I told you I would not let you have it, creature! The ring knows who it's real owner is, and that is Bilbo Baggins! That is why it fell out of your pocket in front of me - so that I could have it!" Bilbo laughs while he picks up the ring and stares through the hollow center. At the same time, Bilbo notices that something is watching him through the ring, and it is not Gollum. (A.C.)
Bilbo is now staring at Gollum again and Gollum turns around to run away from his precious, just for a while until he safely can rescue his precious again, when he realizes he cannot. Something very huge is blocking his way, and again, Gollum realizes he is in big danger. (K.Y.)
Smaug has now had enough not knowing who either Bilbo and Gollum are and what they want in his chamber. The ones before wanted to steal his gold or tried to kill him, but these two are fighting over an golden object that does not even belong there. Smaug has never felt insulted like this in his long life and he has killed for a lot less. The biggest insult for Smaug is the fact the Smaug is not the reason they are there for in the first place. He decides to end this once and for all. Coins, jewelry and other long forgotten treasures slowly falls off toward the sea of gold as the pride dragon reveals himself to the visitors. His intentions are clear: the villagers are trespassing and must be eliminated. As Gollum stands right in front of Smaug he are the first to gaze upon the grin of death. "What is your name maggot? Tell me so I know who's the first to taste the flames that melts gold and turns bones to ashes..." (C.V.)
While Gollum is petrified under Smaug's breath, Bilbo sees his chance to flee. While stumbling across all the treasure collected by smaug, falling numerous times, he loses the Arkenstone among all the other precious stones. He quickly realizes this but thinks to himself that this hobbit's life is worth more than a silly stone that would only bring him trouble. As long as he has his precious ring. He runs as fast as he can while yelling to the dwarves that are waiting for him to come out of the cave to flee when they can. A quick thought about the Gollum strikes his mind - maybe he should have saved the poor soul from the dragon by taking him with him? But he quickly changes his plan, as he remembers what happened in the cave where he found the golden beauty. (A.C.)
Gollum trembled at the very sight of the terrifying Smaug. ”No.. no, must not hurt Smeagol. Smeagol only look for precious.” He took a few steps back but the huge amount of coins and gold underneath his feet made him tumble. ”We must kill hobbits! Hobbits take precious.. Hobbits thief!”. As Smaug came closer, Gollum could feel the disgusting smell of Smaug's breath. Gollum tried to hold his breath but quickly noticed that this also could kill him. He started caughing. ”Smeagol don't want to die, please. Precious needs it's master..”. (K.Y.)
The fear of Gollum seemed to please Smaug who started to laugh out in a creepy dark voice which echoed through the chamber causing coins and trinkets to rattle down from the hills of gold. "Smeagol your name is you say? You do look rather like a creature a thief once spoke of just before he became he died. Your name is not Smeagol!" The dragons temper suddenly changed and he was now angrier than bees from a beehive strucked by a stick. "You take me for a fool? Your name is Gollum is it not? I have heard of your so-called treasure. Is it that thing that has been brought to my mountain? Answer me now or I will eat you right where you stand..." (C.V.)
"No! Please! Please! Smeagol means no harm to Smaug! We can help Smaug! We Can help Smaug get more precious treasure from Dwarves! Yes! "
Bilbo has found the arkenstone and keept it in his hand for a while, wondering what power it might have and if it would be right of him to keep it.
"Should I just give it away? After all, It was I who found it, and that makes me it's rightful owner, doesn't it?", Bilbo says to himself with a quiet voice
He looks around and up towards the dwarves who are standing at the entrance of the great cave. "Filthy and with no shame!" he mutters when he sees one of them clear their throat in a grotesque way and then spit the reslut out on the ground. (A.C)
Even with his eyes closed he could sense any intruders trying to steal from his gold. He was an old dragon, Smaug, but he was still as unreliable as before. Maybe even more. "Filthy creatures try as they might, but the gold will not leave my mountain. I am Smaug, the one who once spread fear to all living. Should I eat you? No... I think I'll wait just a bit..." The dragon pretended to be fast asleep under the gold, waiting. Waiting for his grand entrance. (C.V.)
Gollum, lurking around in the cave, fearless of what may happen to him if he is discovered, is searching for the ring. The bearer of the ring, Bilbo, has no idea that Gollum has become his shadow, following him around wherever he goes. Watching Bilbo gives Gollum a crazier look in his eyes than usual, knowing that he is a few feet away from his precious. ”Soon you will be mine again..” he whispers with a husky voice. (K.Y.)
Bilbo hears a sudden whisper of what appears to be a familiar voice. "Could that be...? No. It couldn't possibly?"
He then goes on, taking in all the beauty of the great treasure collected by Smaug.
Bilbo straightens himself out, petrified by the sudden ambush of the creature he stole the ring from. He climbs backwards to a safer point. "Where did it come from!? How did it know where I was!?", Bilbo is screaming as he is pointing his sword at the petrified Gollum.
"What do you want!? Why are you here!? " Bilbo manages to utter the words with an unexpected tone of courage in his voice. He then proceeds to walk around the terrified creature, wagging his little sword at his face, feeling some sort of power over the mean lookling little creature in front of him. (A.C)
